Emotional Intelligence: From Reality TV to Healthcare Executives

This past Friday I attended the Northern New England Association of Healthcare Executives Shaping the Future conference. From listening to the panels I noticed one term kept coming up repeatedly, emotional intelligence. This is a term I first became familiar with last year from an episode of The Bachelor. It was actually a term that went fairly viral in the world of people who follow the show. It sparked a lot of conversation when two women on the show were arguing and one told the other that she didn’t think she had emotional intelligence. This turned into a big deal because a lot of people, including the woman she was saying it to, did not understand what emotional intelligence was. People made memes about it online and it became a recurring conversation on the show. Honestly, up until this point I also did not know much about emotional intelligence but The Bachelor actually taught me a lot about it. At the conference when people on the panels kept saying it was an important trait in a strong leader I couldn’t help but to think back to the episode of The Bachelor. It shows that important learning can happen at any time and from unlikely sources. It’s amazing how things overlap and a concept talked about by healthcare executives is also relevant on reality TV. Traits of a good leader can be pulled from anywhere, not only just the classroom or workplace.

For anyone who does not watch The Bachelor I’ve posted a link below to a clip from the episode I referenced.
