Long Term Care Inquiries

Last week in class we had a guest speaker come in to talk to us about long term care. As someone who is interested in pursuing an internship or career in long term care I was intrigued to hear about his career path and the jobs he has held along the way. It gave me a sense of what jobs I could potentially be interested in. He spoke about Administrator in Training (AIT) programs and it made me realize it was something that I would like to learn more about. Since our speaker was from Massachusetts he spoke about some of the guidelines in MA for an AIT program. However, since requirements are different from state to state I wanted to take it upon myself to learn more about an AIT program in NH.

According to the New Hampshire Employment Security Website, there are five main requirements to obtaining a license to be a nursing home administrator.

They are as follows:

• ·      Must be at least 21 years of age
• ·       Provide evidence of citizenship or legal residence
• ·      Bachelor’s degree, including a minimum of 15 credits in core knowledge subjects  
• ·      One year of experience as an administrator-in-training (AIT) in a nursing home of at least 50 beds, or equivalent experience
• ·      Provide evidence of professional ethics

There are also specific requirements to keep up with after becoming an administrator. These include continuing education and there are fees that must be paid to renew licenses. This career path is interesting to learn about and I’m glad to have had a speaker come to talk to us about the field of long term care.
