Healthcare and the Media

This week in class we had a guest speaker come to talk to us about her position at a local hospital and her experience with crisis management and experience with the media. A hospital is such an important and stressful environment, and there are bound to be crises that arise. It was interesting to hear what happens within an organization when an emergency breaks.

When thinking about a career in healthcare, the media isn't something that immediately comes to mind. When I think of the media I think of news reporters, celebrities, and journalists, not doctors and hospital employees. However, we learned that hospitals can be breeding grounds for big news stories and the media can learn of these stories very fast. I was shocked to hear from our guest speaker that the media can get to an emergency just as fast as the police.

The media is also a powerful force and it can be tricky to deal with them. One bad story and it could ruin an organizations reputation. This is something to keep in mind when working in healthcare and healthcare management. It was definitely a lesson that we should take with us as we pursue our careers.

It was interesting to learn about this media can effect a healthcare organization.
