Flu Shots In The Workplace

When working in a healthcare setting, most workplaces require employees to get a flu shot. I am a strong believer in vaccines so this is something that I have never thought twice about. However, today I read an interesting article about a company in Minnesota firing 50 employees for not getting their flu shots. This Minnesota based company owns 15 hospitals and 75 clinics in the midwest. The article states that they gave all of their employees warning about the policy. The new policy stated that they  would fire anyone who would not get a flu shot for reasons other than religious or medical reasons.

I think that this is an interesting approach to enforcing flu shots. At first when I read this article I was a little shocked that they fired people over this. After some thought though I realized that I agree with what they're doing. Vaccines are an important thing. They can prevent so many diseases. They are especially important in healthcare settings because people with diseases are constantly being treated and can be so easily spread when in a hospital setting.

This policy is something for us students to keep in mind when working in health management in the future. This policy is one that we would need to determine if we would choose to enforce.
