Lessons From SOHL Panel

Last night I attended a SOHL panel to learn more about career paths after college. Our 3 panelists were from a variety of backgrounds. We had a practice manager, an insurance worker and a clinic administrator from the Air force. It was interesting to hear about these careers opposed to learning about the traditional route of working in a hospital.
My favorite part about this panel was when the panelists were asked to give us advice as early careerists going into healthcare. They gave a variety of answers that I hope to take with me as I pursue a career in healthcare.
The first piece of advice was “Be open and don’t think of life being prescribed.” This panelist stressed the importance of getting rid of the timeline that we all have in our heads. Our lives and our careers will not go as and that is ok. Our careers will take so many twists and turns and it is impossible to know where we will end up in the future.
The second piece of advice was “Don’t underestimate your colleagues.” I think that this piece of advice can be taken in a few different ways and it is very important. The way that I take that is don’t underestimate colleagues because they are powerful. Connections are powerful, relationships are powerful, and collaborations are powerful. That is something to keep in mind when working jobs and pursuing careers.
The third piece of advice we got was that we “need to be intact as a person.” This is so important because we cannot be productive as employees, citizens, friends, family members, etc if we are not intact. This piece of advice applies to the workplace and well beyond. Self care is crucial and we need to put our wellbeing first.

These tips are all things that I will take with me in the future.
