In class we recently had a speaker come to talk to us about his job as a CEO in a local hospital. It was interesting to hear about how at his hospital, they have technology that is the first of it’s kind. I thought it was amazing how a hospital in New Hampshire can be ahead of the game and have cutting edge technology. This sparked my interest in learning about new medical technology. Along with the end of 2017 coming, I decided to learn about the medical technology advances we have made in this past year. The following technological advances are pulled from a list posted by Medical Futurist, the link is posted below.
- The daVinici Surgical System: This system has come a long way in 2017. It is a robotic system that is used for surgeries. It is very precise and can bend and rotate more than a human hand can. The robot requires a surgeon to be in control of it at all times, and it is used to do things that the surgeon could not on their own. This is a huge advance in medical technology because it opens up so many possibilities.
- 3D Printed Casts: This is very interesting because 3D printing is something that is big right now in engineering. It’s been proven that its something that is important in healthcare too. Instead of using uncomfortable and non personalized casts, now it is a possibility to have a cast 3D printed to exactly fit your body. This could also aid in the healing process, not just comfort.
- Insurance Company Launches a Wearable Sensor Package: An insurance company called Oscar Health came up with a system that allows people to submit their Fitbit data in exchange for money. If they are active and reach certain goals they receive $1 per day. This is a very cool way to merge technology with health insurance
These are just a few of the very cool things that are happening in healthcare. I look forward to seeing what comes in 2018.
